I only heard about Ai Weiwei’s arrest yesterday. This tells you something about the extensiveness of China’s censorship. For all the surfing I do on the internet, I had not come across one bit of information on Ai Weiwei’s arrest, something like 2-3 weeks ago. On the arrest itself, I am confounded. I always thought that despite his controversial political works, Ai Weiwei was basically untouchable. The government may watch him but they did ask him to construct the Bird’s Nest for the Beijing Olympics of 2008. They hailed him as the pioneer of the new Chinese cultural front. And now? They have detained him without warning
